Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA)
About This Opportunity
The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) is a multi-donor trust fund administered by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support small and medium-scale renewable energy and energy efficiency projects across the African continent.
SEFA provides catalytic finance to unlock private sector investments in sustainable energy through three funding windows:
1. Project Preparation Grants — Technical assistance and advisory services to bring projects to bankability, including feasibility studies, environmental assessments, and financial structuring.
2. Equity Investments — Risk capital for renewable energy and energy efficiency funds and companies that struggle to access commercial finance.
3. Enabling Environment Grants — Support for policy reforms, capacity building, and regulatory frameworks that create conditions for private investment in clean energy.
SEFA focuses on solar, wind, small hydro, biomass, geothermal, and energy efficiency technologies. Priority is given to projects in low-income countries, fragile states, and underserved regions. The fund has supported over 70 projects across 30+ African countries.
Key sectors include mini-grids and off-grid solutions for rural electrification, utility-scale renewable energy projects, green industrial development, clean cooking solutions, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
SEFA is funded by contributions from the governments of Denmark, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Eligibility
Project developers, energy companies, financial institutions, government agencies, and development organizations operating in African countries. Projects must demonstrate commercial viability and development impact.
